Broken pre-heater hose ALL

The inexpensive fix for a broken pre-heat (flex aluminum) hose is to take out the whole hose (it only takes a moment) and carefully stretch it evenly along its whole length to gain the extra 10 inches or so required to reconnect it onto the manifold outlet. If you're really good you'll often be able to do this trick more than once before you have to get a new hose.

You may want to reverse the hose when you re-install it to so the crispy end is up at the air box. I like to bend out the sidewall clamp a bit so the hose is free to move back and forth a little. You don't need a ring clamp to hold it on and no muffler cement, a simple friction fit is all that is needed.

Although these hoses often get ripe and crack on their own, it could also be a sign you've got a bad motor mount. Make this a good excuse to check them. A quick check is to push (or rock) the engine from left to right -the engine shouldn't lift appreciably.

Please, please, check that the thermostatic flap in the air filter box is working. The flap should close off the pre-heat inlet when the car has been fully warmed. You can open up the air box and look or just pull off the pre-heat hose and feel inside the inlet to make sure it's closed off.

Last time I pointed out a broken pre-heat hose to a friend, he hooked it back up and a week later the car dies. I end up diagnosing a fried AMM(=$$$) and a stuck flap. So much for cheap advice. Another time my father repaired his using a rubber plumbing coupling directly onto the manifold stub. I laughed and told him it would just melt and to keep an eye out for smoke (he was too proud to let me take it off). Been there over a year now and hasn't melted a bit. Hmmm.
