What is this seal/plug called? 200 83

My '83 244 has been leaking quite a bit of oil the past few days.

I was PO'd after having spent last weekend renewing the cam seals and installing a new flametrap. Took the timing belt cover off-no leaks! Valve gasket? Nope. So I crawled under the car, and hey, wait a minute joe, what's dis?? There's a little half moon shape "hole" in the block, where I am assuming there is supposed to be some kind of a seal/plug.

So what is it (so's I can get a new one) and why did it pop out?

Thanks again dudes,

-Jim
