My 86 240 4 cyl. with manual OD appeared to be going into and out of overdrive on it's own so I decided to remove both wires off the solenoid and individually tape them up. The car still drops in to overdrive and seems to stay in overdrive even in lower gears. It even does it at the same place (within a mile or two) on drives to and from work. It's like it has to reach a certain temp. or pressure has to build up to a certain point. I can usually feel a little shutter right before is goes in. The other odd thing is that sometimes when I put the car in reverse it goes very slow even to the point of setting the emergency brake and letting the clutch out and not killing the engine! But this does not happen every time. Sometimes when I'm backing up and push in on the clutch it makes a loud sound. Could the problem be in the relief valve, check valve, filter (which has never been serviced), solenoid, or ???? I first thought it was electrical but by disconnecting both wires to the solenoid I would think other wise unless it's somehow being backfed through the frame. The car is in excellent condition and with only 248,000 miles I know it's good for a few more. My old 76 242 had over 360,000 miles on it when I let it go and it's still going!
