dumb question? lamda-sond? 200 79

I know this is probably a dumb question, but this is where the pros reside.my 79 264 has this lamda-sond system (inicated on the grill)and my manual hasn't arrived via mail yet (can't wait)so what is lamda-sond? and above all I'd realy like to know what this W shaped looking contraption at the front of the engine is? (I got verry lucky and located a original shop manual from a collector, also retired mechanic in germany).
