You may be on target, but don't overlook something easier. The dashboard switches on the older volvos seem underrated. The older (80) 240's ran the full current for the rear defogger through the switch and it finally fried on me. My headlight switch also went finally although Hella headlight conversions might have helped it along. Both of these caused the characteristic smell.
