Main Fuel Pump 200 1984

Model: 1984 240ti sedan

My main fuel pump at times makes a noise, which sounds like a cross between a hiss and a gurgle (almost like a very noisy modem).

The car starts fine.

The sound appears usually after a few minutes of driving but on occasion the car will stall. Usually when I’m in a traffic jam.

Is this a sign of a bad fuel pump?

Any comments or suggestions on things to test will be greatly appreciated.

William R.
