For long term durability, go manual.

'82 240 4sp/OD 165,000 miles - clutch at 85,000, no problems.

'91 245 5sp 230,000 miles - one clutch by other Owner, no problems.

'94 850 Automatic 98,000 miles - was shifting hard, had rear main seal leak, dumped the car. Loved the car, but foresaw problems.

If you are trading the car every three or four years, get the automatic, but for the long haul, only the manual.
