I'm brutish when it comes to removing windshields, never got one out that I didn't manage to break. But then again I was removing ws's that were already dead (cracked, chipped, etc)for replacement.
My reason for removing the ws's myself is so I can prep the metal myself -take my time, get rid of all rust and old butyl, dirt, etc. Something installers don't typically do. But they sure appreciate when they arrive at the house to install the NEW unit.
As to installs I leave the actual install to the experts. Seattle is super competetive when it comes to ws's and the charge is the same at their shop or your driveway. BUTT, most won't install other ws's or certainly not a used one. The other benifit is that on older 240's you can have the 91/92 and later style 240 WS installed (same price) which has the flush rubber molding trim around the ws from the factory. Looks GREAT!!
So, after all that, do I have any advice for your situation?
1) You can buy an install kit from Volvo.
2) You can buy the appropiate sealant from most GOOD auto parts or body supply places. It's not butyl anymore, I think it's urethane based. Don't use ordinary Silicone sealer to "glue" a ws in.
3) Get some inexpensive rubber suction cups to manuever the ws with.
4) Get an eager helper and wear latex gloves.
5) Practice to work quick. The sealant can skin over more rapidly than advertised. If does skin over it will leak.
6)Practice putting the WS in dry.
7) Make sure everything is VERY clean before applying sealant.
8) Try to make sealant continous.
