Possible Steering Problem 200 1985

A few weeks ago, I replaced the starter switch and not knowing what I was doing, I accidently moved the steering column about an inch or two in a back and forth motion after undoing a couple of screws I did not have to undo. Now, (this condition may have been there before and I didn't notice it) the steering seems to be a bit weird. The wheel does not readily return to a center position on its own. It will come most of the way back but then must be turned back the last quarter turn. On a big (tight) turn, I can let the wheel go and it will stay in the tight turn (forever) until I manually turn it back. Now, I am very new to the '85 DL so maybe this is normal but I have a sinking feeling it isn't. Anybody have and experience similar to this or is anyone able to set me straight. I think some setting straight would be good right now. Thanks
