Doesn't accelerate 200 83

I have owned my 240 for 3 years and its been reliable (but thirsty) transport for the family. It is a 2.3L automatic estate.

I think there is something wrong with the transmission. The engine runs ok and it pulls away OK but if you put your foot down when doing about 40 the engine races to 4K and there seems to be no/little power delivered to the drive wheels.

I checked and topped up the transmission fluid which was low but the fault remains.

Is this serious (Major work ) or something out of adjustment?

Any suggestions tips would be useful as I have never owned an auto before so no experience of diagnosis / repair (yet).
