sond light on in Dash

i have a sond light lit up on the dash of my 86 760 v6 . i'm assuming it's refering to the oxygen senser . would it just light if the oxygen sensor was bad or if there was a prob in the the system somewhere . i picked up a sensor but haven't put it in yet
