Thanks to you guys for suggestions and particularly to Herb Golz! My problem was lack of power and hesitation on acceleration, high fuel consumtion and a surging up and down idle speed, particularly on waiting at lights etc. which made the engine jerk and the whole car shudder.
I tried Herb's suggestion of cleaning the throttle body. First I also cleaned the cable drum and thew connection rod from it to the throttle body all of which were pretty grimy and oily. That sorted some of the problem. I then cleaned the throttle body with carb cleaner and also using a toothbrush and white spirit and sprayed afterwards with WD40. I also cleaned the accessible part of the air control valve and checked the two rubber hoses to it which were clear. The moveable parts in the valve were pretty dirty, but after cleaning seemed to move quite freely. I also cleaned the whole engine area around these parts which was quite oily and grimy. I was hopeful but sceptical, but afterwards the car had regained its acceleration, power and responsiveness.
However, the niggling idle problem is still there, but not as pronounced. The car seems to idle at about 750 to 800 on average, but will regularly diminish in idle speed, then increase to about 1000rpm before falling back to normal. This happens in a cycle, a few seconds in between. There is some jerking of the engine and the car shudders enough to make it uncomfortable in your seat.
My car has a B280E engine, but no 02 (or Lambda) sensor and no catalytic converters. These were not introduced on the UK market until about 91-92 my local Volvo workshop tells me. So to pick your brains again, what should I look for to fix the now lesser idle problem? My car has about 73000 miles on the clock. Previous to this I replaced plugs, ignition wires, rotor arm and distributor cap and changed the oil.
