What is the sensor adjacent to engine coolant temperature sensor? 700 1989

Can someone tell me what the sensor near the engine coolant temperature sensor on an 89 740 turbo is? I have just had the ECT sensor replaced in an attempt to stop the car cutting out whilst driving. This seems related to overheating but the gauge doesnt climb to red, it flickers then drops right back. It can happen half a mile from cold, and standing in the sun seems to worsen it. Has died once since ECT sensor replaced last week and unusually, started again first attempt - can take 5-25 minutes. Is the other sensor directly related to the ECT one and is it worth replacing it anyway before moving on to crank position or RPM sensors, or the fuel pump, fuel injection or any other relays?
