speedo compatibility 200 84

I put the 85mph speedo/odo unit from my 82 into my 84 (120mph) while the odometer is getting fixed on the 84 unit. Does anyone know if I can trust the speed displayed or not? I'm not really sure how the internals work. I'm not concerned about the mileage, just the speed.
