exhaust manifold studs broken - now what to do 700 1988

Just replaced my exhaust mainifold gaskets on my 740 turbo and removal went well, however, torquing exh manifolds nuts to 38 ft-lb proved to be a set back. 3 studs broke and the others torqued to spec. Wondering if 38 lb spec obtained from Volvo dealer is actually correct? Wish I had replaced the studs. I am still driving with broken studs since I dont't hear the put-put sound. How long can I expect this to last. Can the studs be replaced without removing the head. Other ideas would be appreciated.
