Battery disconnect causes sputter !?!?! 1991

...Hoping for a little help here... about a month ago, I took a little water under the hood. Immediately afterwards, my 91 240 had a little trouble starting (took about 2 minutes of coughing to idle properly). I immediately checked/dried everything (plugs, dist., af, etc). For about 2 days, she continued to idle rough (only when cold) and hesitate on acceleration FROM IDLE ONLY. The coughing and idling (from 2 days ago) caused the 'check engine' light to turn on. Heres the kicker: We all know to disconnect the battery to extinquish the light? Right? Well, doing so REINTRODUCES the cough/hesitation problem for about 2 days; then it will clear up and everything is fine until i disconnect the battery. My last run was 2 weeks of daily use without a problem. finally decided to disconnect the battery, and it instantly recurred. Happens EVERY time.

Any help/insight is greatly appreciated.
