brake lights turn on rear defrost and plate lite 200 1987

i have 87 240 dl wagon. recently noticed that the wires passing thru hinges were broken on one side. every thing worked on tailgate but power lock. no biggie. 2wks ago bulb out lite was on intermittent when i hit brakes, and the defrost switch lit up. investigated found that when brakes on, center light comes on dim, license plate light comes on and defrost comes on. if i turn on running lights/headlights then center brake light comes on plate lights off. hit brakes center brake light off plate lights on defrost on. if i turn on defrost center brake light comes on till defrost times out, and will go out when i press brakes. so i opened the gate pulled wires from both hinges and made repairs.

lock works.

help.

oh yeah if i open tail gate press brakes, no problem. as i lower gate the plate lights come on and center brake light dims/ goes out they flicker back and forth so on and so forth. sometimes works fine most of the time crazy. fuse fine. pulled brake light fuse, press brakes plate light on, defrost on. all wires in gate look good no cracks in insulation, or the like. any ideas anyone. e-mail me if you could need state inspection.
