AC works off & on 900 94

I'm stumped. The AC on my '94 940, non-turbo stated working intermittedly & now not at all. The grounds all seem to be ok, tight & clean. Could this be a relay problem? When it was working, I thought the system might be a little shy of 134a. I bought a can & the system wouldn't take any. The clutch was engaged when I did this. Fuse is fine. Any ideas, now that it constantly in the high 90's with 100% humidity?! I'm sweating out an answer in good ol' Nashville. Thanks. Murph
