Engine Dies after starting when cold 240-260 1986

ICQ>

I have a 1986 240DL. Automatic transmission.Approx 190K miles. When we start it up in the morning and it is cold, it will run for a few seconds and then die. Usually two or three starts before we can make it run. I work on these cars myself, although the fuel injection scares me. I have just replaced both fuel pumps and the fuel pressure regulator to remedy an earlier problem(noisy fuel pump). Fuel filter was replaced at that time also. Are there any simple checks that I can do without taking it to someone? What shuld I do first?
