New car woes

I wouldn't say new car, nor would I say woe. Actually, its my new used car, and I hear things. I hear 16 years of not driving really far, rattling away underneath me. I got this 86 740GLE a couple of days ago, and it only has 50,000 miles on it. I am really happy with it, but I don't want to think that everythings cool just because it has low-miles. there are a couple of things that I want to ask you guys about:

1) My clutch pedal creaks every time that I press it or release it. I figured that lubricating the spring would work, but what would I want to use? I also know that sometimes you don't want to lubricate stuff like that. Do I?

I figure the other alternative would be to replace it. Is that hard? Is it expensive?

2) The big sound on my mind is under the hood. When I accelerate and sometimes idle while in motion, I hear a rattling sound that in sync with the revving of the engine. There are also some sputtering exhaust-type sounds as well. Despite these things, the car has a lot of pep, and isn't running hot, and not burning a lot of gas or oil. My problem may be a-symptomatic.

If its not in my head, I was thinking that it was the timing chain going bad. Do you think that's possible on an engine with only 50,000 miles on it? I don't have a garage, and I asked a dealership what they would charge, and they said 275. Is that a lot? Is it an easy job?

Anything you guys can tell me would be great. Thanks.
