German transmission 700 1987

Hi,

Help,

1987 Volvo 740 GLE (Non-turbo) w/German Trans

Yesterday (Thurs., Aug. 2, 2001), I was driving in very hot temps. (100 deg. F). On a highway, my transmission began to slip. I pulled off and stopped, listened to the tranny and it sounded like it had a ball of coathangers revolving in the area where the trans and the engine are joined. I turned off the engine, checked the trans fluid and found that it was over the MAX level. After about five minutes, I started the car again and after initially hearing the "coathanger" sound for 1-2 seconds, the sound stopped. I drove back to work. After 3-4 hours as I started the car for the ride home, the same scenario occured: Star, sound 1-2 secs., no sound then drive.

After about 8-10 miles, I could here a "whining" when the gears shift. If I tapped lightly and quickly on the gas from a constant pressure and speed (55 MPH), I could feel a little slip.

I made it home (15 miles) and drove back to work today (Friday). I know, I know I should take it to a mechanic immediately, but I have no choice - it's my only car.

Look, I love this car and I don't want to irreparably damage it, but I have to try to at least do something that will let me continue to drive it until I have the time/money/rent car to enable me to take it to a shop.

The fluid is still "red" with a little darkening, but does not smell burned, amd I cannot see any foreign material in it.

Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
