Re: upper heater hose replacement 240-260 1979

ICQ>

Mickey,

The upper heater hose goes to the head. The lower heater hose goes to the water pump bypass pipe. It is much easier to throw your screwdriver away and use a 7mm socket on the hose clamps.

My rule of thumb is this. This is not a fun job, but I trust in the Volvo gods that there must be an easy way. And there is. Before you climb on the fenders, or on top of the radiator, believe me. there is an easy way.

First, loosen the hose clamp at the hose to the head. 7mm socket. Next loosen the hose at the manifold on the firewall. Remove the hose at the head using a prybar to lever it off. At the heater end, you may want to slit the hose with a razor blade to ease in it's removal. One hose down.. Loosen the clamp at the bypass pipe. Again, use the razor blade. Same thing at the heater end. Clean the ends for the new hoses.

Lay the new hoses out, and figure out which end goes where. Use new ABBA hose clamps for best results. In the lower hose, spray some ''slippery stuff'' .[ Armour-all works good, or the like. Don't use oil based stuff, because it can distort the hose, and cause problems later. Rubber and oil doesn't mix. Dish soap if you don't have ''tire shiny''.] Install the lower (easy) hose and tighten the clamps. The upper hose is a challenge, but if you don't let it beat you, it's easy. The sharp ''S'' curve goes closest to the head, and the ''S'' is to dodge the dipstick tube . Lube the inside of the hose and fit a clamp on the end of the hose snug enough to keep the clamp from falling off. The drive part of the clamp goes on the left side of the hose. Hold the hose by the opposite end and feed it through it's course to the head. When you make contact with the head you can go to the other side and lever it on with the prybar. This is when you appreciate a good lube on the inside of the hose. Hook the hose up et the heater end, tighten the clamps, fill w/coolant w/heater on till the level is right and the heater is hot, and you're done! It's easier done than said......If you could only see me type!
