George,
If you have a Haynes 740-760 manual check page #178 for details on replacing auto trans fluid. The procedure is relatively simple. Drain the transmission pan by either removing the plug or if there is no drain plug removing the pan. Replace plug or pan and add 2 litres (two quarts) of proper ATF (Dexron) through the dip stick tube. (This is for the AW71 trans/ ZFHP422 requires adding 2.5 litres each step) Then clean all grime and dirt away from the oil cooler return connection. (The cooler return is one of two metal lines attached to the side of the trans casing. The return line is the one furthest to the rear.) Disconnect the return line and attach about a two foot section of clear plastic tubing to it. Place the other end of the plastic tube in a drain pan. Start the engine and watch the drain line ...fluid will be pumped out through it. When bubbles appear in the draining fluid switch off the engine. Add another two litres of fluid through the dipstick tube. Start the engine a second time ... once again as soon as bubbles appear in the drain line shut it down. Now pull the clear plastic line off the return and reconnect it to the transmission. Make sure the connection is tight ... then add a final two litres of ATF. Start the engine and check the fluid level with the dip stick cold side (40 degrees C) to see if it falls between min. and max. Check the return coupling and pan (plug) for leaks. If all is well, drive the car for about a half hour or at least ten miles. Then check the hot side of dipstick with engine running and the car on a level surface. Top up if necessary but do not over fill ... fluid should stand some where between min. and max marks on the hot side of the dip stick. This procedure allows replacement of 6 litres of old fluid instead of just two if you only drained the pan.
Hope this is of some help to you.
