Intermittent start problem 200 89

I am a new Volvo owner, know nothing about cars. Bought 1989 240 DL two months ago. Just before buying the previous owner said he couldn't get it started so took it to his mechanic who did a basic tune up and the problem seemed fixed. Three days after I got it the car wouldn't start (turns over, doesn't crank) first thing in the morning. Then, several hours later it started right up, so I didn't worry about it. It has been an off and on problem ever since and I haven't had it looked at yet (various reasons) but am ready to tackle it now. Full tank or low, wet or dry, hot or cool weather do not seem to have anything to do with it. Also, once I get it going, it has not yet failed to start later that day, but I'm worried I'll get stranded sooner or later.
