Re: engine 740-760 90

ICQ>

Seriously, the V6 in your beast does not have a good reputation in these parts. Your engine was made as a cooperative with Puegot/Renault/Volvo (PRV) and assembled in France. I don't remember the last year Volvo used this engine but I thought it was '89 - '90. The engine or some variant shows up in a wide range of cars from the Delorean to some AMC beast (Renault).

You should have a B28OF in your 760. Actually a bit better than the earlier variants that Volvo used. The good thing about this engine is that it holds like 7 quarts of oil,so you can impress the guys at the lube and tune place.

Yours has EFI so it has like 140 hp or something. But pretty gutless for the size of motor.

Some of the bad rap come from the complexity of the motor,(very expensive and hugely time consuming to fix), the low hp to hi wt., the inability to add aftermarket goodies or build the motor up for more hp, and piss poor gas mileage for such a weak engine.

However, the main thing that all the jokes and barbs you will get about admitting you own a V6 Volvo was due to the B27F and early B28F variants used in the 260 series. These indeed have a tendency to go into full tilt upper motor destruction. There were/are methods to slow this but mainly it was a design flaw that allowed this destruction to happen. The typically scenario was lack of oil to the cam/rocker area (due to too small oil galleries) and cams (too soft) that need constant amounts of oil (as most engines do).

The good news is that your late 80's engine is better than the early units. Change you oil often, put new seals in if it leaks and fill that pup with synthetic or Delo. Keep your air filter clean and use Volvo/Mann oil filters.

Just be vigilant about your engine.

All that said I owned an '81 262C with a B28F that ran fine with 172,000 miles. Didn't burn any oil and had good compression. So I can say that the PRV V6 was not a great or even "good" motor, but it was an OK V6 in the early '80's. Take a look at some other V6's with over 170K and they will be toast!! That Japanese V6 in the Chrysler mini van was/is crap.....but I don't think it's a PRV!!!!

The thing I really liked about my 262C was other than the Bertone stuff, the chassis was the same as the 240....should be the same for 760 era...

Got lousy mileage? Don't bother hooking the gas gauge back up!! (Sorry couldn't resist) Use normal Volvo methods to check your gas gauge.
