Light Grey Wire with Red Stripes Powers AC Condenser Fan and What Else. 700 1987

Hello

Our 1987 740 non turbo seemingly did not come with an AC Condenser fan. We have converted to 134a so we installed a salvage yard cooling fan. The wiring for the fan was tied up with a twist tie hopefully by the factory rather than by a cooling fan thief. The power wire for the fan comes from the temp sensing plug in the radiator. However that power wire (grey with red stripes or possibly red with grey stripes) actually splits on its way to the electric cooling fan and takes off across the front of the car and makes its way to the other side of the car. Eventually it goes into another wire loom. Please help us find what else is hooked up to this power wire.

The cooling fan has a plug which accepts two wires. One is the color of the power wire above and the other is black. Strangely enough the fan will run with power to the one colored wire (described above) without the other black wire being hooked up or grounded. Does this mean the motor has an internal short grounding itself in some manner.

This last question may explain how we damaged our fan motor if such is the case. To check the flow of air from the fan motor, I reversed the power wire to the fans plug to feel the fan reverse the direction of spin. To feel air flow differences. It reversed the direction of spin and air flow initially (only once) but now seems to want to spin only one direction. If I try to reverse the power to the fans plug now the circuit blows a fuse.

Thanx for your thoughts
