I have a 95 940 Turbo wagon with 105K on it; bought this car used in January 99 with 45K on it. Traded an 89 740GL with 210K on it (should have fixed the oil seal leaks, long story) for this car. I've been continuing to have coolant system probs with this car. Something is making this car seem to eat coolant, but I'm not seeing any telltale puddles on the driveway.
I've had to replace the cooling fan - it burnt up last summer, the radiator, and the water pump. Still, the car continues to seem to use coolant, particularly in hotter weather. Sometimes, the cooling fan seems to run forever, and the car smells hot and like oil and burnt coolant to me after even short drives. Maybe this is just a characteristic of Bricks - they all seem to smell hot and like gasoline to me... And the engine temp needle stays squarely in the middle of the gauge.
I realize that air bubbles take awhile to flush out of the system... but the cap seems to keep leaking minute amounts of fluid out of the coolant reservoir bottle. Do I need a new bottle? (I did try a new green cap and it leaked the same as the old green cap). Or is the system getting too hot and should I replace either the thermostat, which I believe is a 97C one, with an 82C one (I live in Mississippi and do a lot of hot weather driving), or check the cooling fan switch? I am not seeing any leaks when the car is idling in the driveway, nor am I being followed by a telltale trail of coolant as I drive.
I am just a novice at auto repair, but replacing the thermostat seems like something I can handle on this car.
Also, would switching grades of oil to a weight that is more suited to hot weather than 10W-30 make sense? Synth oil has never been used in this car, but it seems to eat about a quart or so every 3,000 miles... and no telltale oil stains on the driveway. I did just replace a turbo hose that ruptured...
