intermittent spongy brake pedal 240-260 82

ICQ>

Yesterday while driving in the city, I put my foot on the brake pedal approaching a stop sign and the pedal went halfway to the floor before I got any response. Thinking that I had a master cylinder problem I pulled over and had a look at the reservoir and the brake fluid level was right up where it should be and no signs of leakage anywhere. I drove home with some anxiety about braking capability but the brake pedal worked just fine, very normal response. I drove the car today and again the brakes were "normal". Then, a short distance from home I put the brakes on and you guessed it; the pedal was real "spongy". Anybody out there know what gives here? Thanks in advance! Richard g.
