I had the same problem with my 1984 240 a couple of years ago... The overdrive switch was shot and caused the relay to short circuit. If you replace the relay, replace the switch to so to avoid burning up a new relay. It's pretty easy to do. On the manual transmissions, the switch is on the right side of the transmission directly under the hole where condensation from the AC drips. Double check to make sure the wire that connect to the switch is in good condition. Next, the relay can be found by removing the glove compartment (Six screws, I think)- Directly left you'll see a small blure box with wires connecting to it held by a clamp directly underneath the right center air vent.
