Trannies don't often shudder. This sounds like a worn or oily clutch. If you're good with tools, you could fix it yourself. The transmission on a 122 is easy to remove, and from there it's just a matter of removing the bellhousing. Depending on how much you want to spend, you could replace just the clutch disk or buy a clutch kit containing the disk, pressure plate and throwout bearing.

If your clutch is oily, be sure to stop the source of contamination before replacing it. Oil may seep into the clutch if it is leaking on the outside of the engine, but it is more likely to come from the the crankshaft seal or the camshaft access plug at the rear of the engine block. You'll have to remove the flywheel to fix these, and you'll need a new plug and seal (available from Volvo). -Glenn.
