Could be bad news. The check engine light is connected to computer that is controlling the fuel injection and ignition systems. It is basically telling you that some sensor is not operating properly. This could be a lose wire, lose fitting, etc.

I have a '91 940SE, and have had more than anyone's share of Check Engine lights. Problems have ranged from EGR pipes corroded (EGR sensor was trying to say this), air mass meter, idle speed sensor, etc.. Unfortunately you may have to be prepared to cash in a few t-bills. I will add one comment though. You should invest in the Chilton's manual for the Volvo's of this gender. It will takes you through how to read the error codes from the same computer that has turned on the Check Engine light. It also shows you how to reset the light, and have the system re-check itself. On several occasions my problems have gone away by resetting the system.
