With the engine at operating temp, out of gear, no a/c ,no headlights, and with O2 sensor connected you should adjust the CO adjustment screw to obtain a dwell reading of 40-45 degree with the dwell meter attached to the test lead and set to 4 cyl scale (the 4 cyl scale applies to 6 cyl models also, this makes the meter have a 90 degree range. Has nothing to do with the cylinder count of engine for this purpose). The dwell will oscillate but the center point of oscilation should be the 40-45 degree range.

You do not ground the idle lead while doing this.
