Bearings are shot -- seal soon to follow.....



When you examine your new Volvo water pump, you'll see that several of the holes are elongated (oval) instead of round. This permits slight vertical movement of the pump once it's installed over the studs, but before the nuts 'n bolts are tightened.

After installing the gasket and top "mushroom seal", slide the pump over the mounting studs. Loosely install the nuts over the studs. Then lift, or pivot the pump upwards so the mushroom seal is flattened against the mating under surface of the cylinder head.

You should exert maybe 10-15 pounds of upward force on the pump (against the head) -- and while forcing the pump up, snug down the nuts to secure it. I do this using a big screwdriver as a pry bar.

Other hints:

I agree with William -- use a bit of gasket sealer between the pump and gasket (I like Permatex aircraft gasket goo) and RTV between the gasket and block (I like the red stuff).

Don't put the aircraft sealer against the block -- that would make the next replacement much more difficult. Also, don't overdo the RTV.

Be certain to carefully scrape 'n clean the block surface.

Be certain to carefully scrape 'n clean the mating cylinder head under surface. I like to use a little sandpaper to remove any accumulated rust, and I examine it after using a small mirror.

Be certain to clean 'n sand the round surface of the pipe.

(During disassembly/reassembly don't overlook the small bolt 'n nut securing the pipe to the pump.)

Spread a bit of RTV in the groove for the mushroom seal, and also on the pipe before installing the O-ring.

Put some RTV on the top surface of the mushroom seal.

Install the O-ring on the pipe, and then smear some RTV over the O-ring. Also, smear some inside the mating hole -- this seals, but also lubricates the O-ring, which helps prevent dislodging during installation.



You know, of course, to drain the radiator 'n block first.

I'm sure you know to:

- remove the four nuts holding the fan to the pump flange;

- remove the two top screws holding the shroud to the radiator;

- tip the shroud toward the engine;

- lift out the fan;

- lift out the shroud (must squeeze it slightly to fit past the hoses);

- remove the "bell-shaped" pulley from the front of the pump.

When you reinstall the shroud, be sure it engages the lower edge of the radiator.

BTW -- while you have all this stuff off your engine, consider replacing the timing belt, tensioner, and three front seals, if needed. This is the time.
