OK, the dual Strombergs in my 144s appear to be shot (I can't get an adjustment out of them to get rid of the pollution). From what I've been reading, here are my options:
Rebuild the Strombergs - most people are telling me they are inferior to the SU's so I think this may not be a good way to go.
Replace them with SU's - I could look for a set of used SU's (HS6?) and rebuild them. These are appearently better then the Strombergs, but need tuning often (which isn't really a great concern to me).
Replace them with a Single Webber kit (IPD or other) - From what I have read, easier tuning, better reliability and gas milage, but the performance may not be as good from a single carb? Also, it won't work with my stock air cleaner assembly and isn't original looking. It's also expensive (over $400).
Use a different carb setup - I have a set of brand new Dual 40mm Solex Kadron carbs that I never put on my VW Beetle. Can I use these or some other cheaper dual setup? I found a webpage where someone was selling manifolds to adapt single barrel webbers to a B20 here:

Obviously I want to go the cheapest way possible with this and have a good running car. It's basically a daily driver and I have no immediate plans on modifying the engine for more performace.
