It is very likely that your ecu is fried. `89 was about the worst year (with the -561 jetronic box) I have been down this road and from my bitter experience, DO NOT use aftermarket remanufactured ecu's. Especially Python. I am much lighter of pocket and wiser from my dealings with them. I got my genuine Bosch ecu (the improved -951 model) from Brentwood Volvo (listed on the recommended sources part of this site) and my car now runs better than it ever has.
