Re: M46 +OD Volvo recommends 200 1983

Paul:

I recently ordered a few Volvo manuals

In the Volvo service supplement for M46, M47 and M47II and Types P and J

Overdrives (printed Jan1991) Volvo states:

" On M46 and M47 manual transmissions Volvo Synthetic P?N 1161324 or Type F

transmission fluid is recommended. Under no circumstances should DexronII be used in these transmissions."

"By using DexronII the first gear brake will not operate properly and/or result in noisy operation. On M46 models the overdrive may slip"

This is why I was having trouble after clutch and seals, O/D filter etc. service was done. I was having problems (short scrunch)in aggressive shifting into 3rd gear and very occasionly a light scrunch into 4th gear.

I was hesitant to use Redline or Amsoil especially because of this last sentence, but a number of people's experience convinced me to try Redline. I found a dealer and replaced most of the fluid, I should have taken the bottom off of O/D but I had it on a slope and got 80% of new after service oil out. I added 2 quarts of Redline MTL.

It now shifts very smoothly (after less than 8 miles) at all speeds and the O/D shifts instantly. I have put on about 1000miles since. It might be that Amsoil wouild be even better but it is hard to see how things could be much better. But then I never thought the original transmission was a problem either, so who knows?

At the dealer when and where I bought the car a customer used some low friction lube in his M46 transmission. He was warned by the dealer not to do it. He fried the O/D unit in a few short kilometers and the Tech (Tony) told me it made the cone clutch completely frictionless and even sanding the surfaces it remained a highly frictionless surface. I recently checked with him but he could not remember what the lube was. Tony has a 245 M46 +O/D with close to 500,000 kms (300,000 miles) he is still on the original clutch and has used only type F in its long untroubled life.

There is a URL which I have misplaced which has all specs for all Volvos

and models, there it also allowed type G in the M46.

My feeling is that one should NOT use motor oils on O/D transmissions. I know that earlier specs allowed it but I have the latest manual from Volvo referenced above. One clue I got from researching the net was that the friction enhancers allow a very quick transition to high static friction

from low dynamic friction. This is exactly what is needed in the O/D cone clutch and also in the synchromesh operations. I do not know but I very much doubt that motor oils would have these components, as they would be counterproductive.... imagine increased friction at the top and bottom of the piston strokes where momentarily there is no movement.

Cheers, Sheldon
