Gear Shift Button Won't Depress 200 1992

I'm a first-time Volvo owner with an annoying problem. More often than not, on the first start in the morning the gear shift release button won't depress. I've tried pumping the brakes, letting the car warm up, etc. and nothing seems to work. Sometimes I have to fiddle around with the button for two or three minutes before it finally depresses--and then for no apparent reason. This never happens after the first start in the morning. Am I missing some secret Volvo button mashing technique or might something actually need adjusting or repairing?
