Simpistically, the points make and break the current flowing through the coil, points open, field breaks down, coil delivers spark.

The feed side of the coil will be live irrespective of whether the engine is running, as long as the ignition is switched on.

Most electric fuel pumps have a regulator, just take a fused supply and have it come on when the ignition is turned on. Mostly the coil feed isn't fused (from memory) so it isn't an ideal place from which to take a fuel pump feed.
