hard start...bad cold idle 200 1980

Is it normal that my 1980 240 is starting hard in the summer heat? She won't idle when she first starts, but once she is moving and warms up a bit, she idles fine. Also here's a tough one, she won't warm up at all, she runs real cold, and I'm constantly having to add coolant...huh? I haven't a leak in the cooling system, and the car is not running hot, or at least my gage says it's not...might it be that all of these problems (hard start and idle included)are due to a falty thermostat? thanks, Mike
