Smiths speedometer 1800 1973

Hello - I guess I have the common problem from what I can gather... the speedometer flucuates about 5 mph and is about 15 mph fast. ie - it reads 65-70 when actually going about 55. The cable appears to be ok - but the right angle adapter has some play in it which may be normal - not sure..

Does anyone have any suggestions about the right way to diagnose this? Thanks
