Watching the temp gage, and suddenly....???? 200 1990

It's hot here in SC today. While driving home I had the A/C on and while waiting for a light to change I heard or felt or sensed a pop or click or tick. I always keep an eye on the temp gage in the summer. Well I was watching it this time when this click occured, and as soon as it happened the needle started to climb toward the red zone. The temp gage has always run in the mid range of the gage. Never going over half way. Could the thermostat have failed right then or maybe a fuse to engine cooling fans?

It was almost as if the gage knew I was watching and decided that if I was going to watch then it would give me something to watch. How did it know I was watching? Is this part of the OBD?

Please help?
