How critical is the alignment of crank and camshaft during timing belt replacement 700 1989

Hello

Is there any room for error when aligning these two. Sometime ago it was explained to me that some cars only require that the marks be reasonably close. Some how these cars would fine tune the settings themselves.

Fact or Wrong.

I dont understand how that would be possible. If this is fiction what would be most likely result of the two alignments being off slightly/ eyes are not as good as they use to be.
