Well, there are still "big engines" around today. I think you can drive a Mustang or a Camaro with a "big engine" and get over 20mpg. And the reason this wasn't the cast in the 70's is that the state of microelectronic technology didn't exist to allow for efficient fuel injection and ignition timing.
