245 Turbo - fuel pump noise 200 1982

The fuel pump on my 1982 245 Turbo is making a rattling sound. The sound occurs more or less constantly in a random pattern - about 1 second of noise followed by 1 second of quite, followed by 1 second of noise etc., but it is quite random, not perfectly regular. It sounds like it could be a mechanical problem within the pump, or it could be air in the system (or cavitation). The engine runs fine, but the pump sounds like a failure waiting to happen. I have tried the following with no change to the noise: replaced fuel pump, accumulator, and filter. I also verified the tank pump is working. Does anyone have any ideas?
