Replacing AC Unit on 81' 240 GL 200 1981

Well with it being summer and all, and living in houston, the ac needs to be replaced on my volvo. But how do I know if its my AC unit that neeeds to be replaced, or just more freon ? What cost should I expect to run into ? A volvo shop in town sells the units for $345
