Help with disturbing event 200 1982

Hello all,

Yesterday took my son to his Scout meeting, about a 25 min drive, got to the intersection right before the place, and it stalled, just kind of went quiet. Tried to restart, sounded really strange, my first thought was the timing belt broke, but its still in tact, and the engine turns over, but sounds like it has no compression at all. The car, 1982 244 DL with 228k plus miles. LH-1 injection, Chrysler Ignition. Symptoms, belt and front of the engine are covered with oil, from what I suspect is cam seal leakage, could oil have gotten between the sprockets and belt and allowed it to slip enough teeth to cause this no compression symptom? The belt is old and about ready for replacement anyway. That's why I thought it broke.

I'm hoping its just a slipped belt, I'm going to try and align the marks to see if in fact it has slipped, just trying to see if I'm on the right track or not. If its total engine failure I'll be really surprised, but it doesn't sound good turning over...

Thanks...

Chuck Jaxel
