Knock sensor problems 200 1989

I have a 1989 245 with 203k on it. Over a long period of time I have been getting a "check engine" light leading to a 143 code (knock sensor malfunction). I have changed sensor several times as well as other components with little success, in fact the car is running worse. I have even gone back and retorqued the sensor bolt. Can anyone give me some ideas in this area. Another question, according to the info. that I have when the 143 code comes up timing is retarded by 10 degrees, does it stay retarded as long as the light stays on?
