I hope Kenny didn't overwhelm you with his list of 'easy' tuneup parts. Yes $90 per hour is incredibly expensive. Where I live its $50 per hour and I consider that extortionate. As Volvos are one of the easiest cars on earth to work on, I'd recommend doing as much of your own repairs as possible. If you buy a haynes manual for your car at a bookstore (approx 20 dollars) and do just a little maintanence work, you'll easily save enough to pay for the book and parts compared to the mechanic.
I recommend starting out easy. Open up the air filter box, take a look at it, if its been in there over 10-15k miles, and it looks dirty, replace it. It costs $6 where I live, and is very easy to do. Next up in difficulty is changing spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, and rotor. These should all be done on the same occasion as they all effect each other. They're really easy to replace since all except the spark plugs just snap off, no tools required. Your car should be running noticeably smoother once those parts are replaced.
You should dive into this only at your own pace, but before you think of doing anything, buy the haynes manual, its well worth it. It has all the information you need to fix anything on your car, including a handy schedule to tell you when to check and replace things. Good luck!
