fails to shift gear above speed 40 200 1989

Hi, I have had this 1989 Volvo 240DL wagon for a little over 2 years, and it has been fine after several long trips across the country.

The transmission is automatic with overdirve.

Unfortunately, the car now has a problem related to the transmission (I guess). It fails to change gear after reaching a speed 40 mph, in which I can already

hear the engine starts spinning fast. I could manage to have it shift gear up yesterday when driving home. But this morning it never changed gear up

even after I pushed the gas padel hard to reach a speed close to 50 mph.

Speed higher than 50mph is almost impossible.

Could anybody help me out? Any suggestions will be truly appreciated.

thanks,

vincent
