'78 245 Hot-Start Problems 200 1978

I rebuilt the B21-F (CIS) in my '78 245 about 30,000 miles ago. She used to jump to life with a turn of the key! Now, when cold, she still starts first time every time. However, acceleration is often not as quick as it used to be until it warms up. Very poor acceleration - put the pedal to the metal wait - then she slowly gains speed. I never pull onto a highway without at least 1/2 mile clear in each direction. Seems she's particularly perky on cold mornings - but will never put you "back" in your seat, even on the best of days. I can live with that, after all she's a retired grocery-getter turned project-car. However, the real problem is that after I get to where I'm going (ie: AutoZone), I've learned through trial and error that the car has only ONE good chance to start - if it doesn't fire up the first time, (which most times it doesn't) you have to crank and crank and crank until it gets enough fuel to fire up - then she goes. To her credit, I must say she's always started (eventually)and has never left me stranded - despite the odd looks from others in the parking lot and kind offers of cell phones to call for a tow!

I think it's a fuel problem - either low pressure or temporary starvation, (lost it's prime?)somehow affected by temperature. Not sure how to trouble-shoot or cure. It's been going on for a while now, and I don't want to wear out the starter or blister the battery.

Any constructive thoughts, ideas, &/or suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
